Curriculum

Kings Monkton College student

At Kings Monkton, we aim to provide a curriculum which is, at all levels of the school, broad, balanced, challenging, multi-sensory and fun! Subject teaching is based around the national curriculum but is very much tailored to the needs of individuals and the aims of the school. Through the curriculum, as well as in extra-curricular areas, we aim to develop independent learning, the ability to work with others, investigative and discussion skills, creativity and a wide range of social skills.

At Primary School level there is a strong emphasis on the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science – with thorough grounding in basic skills in language and numeracy. This is complemented by a wide range of other subjects in the weekly timetable, with specialist teaching in subjects such as French from an early age.

In the Senior School all pupils study both French and Spanish until at least the end of Year 9 and all have the opportunity to gain recognised ICT qualifications. At this stage a very large number of subjects are studied so that informed choices can be made for GCSE. Most pupils study for at least 10 GCSEs, selected from a wide range of options. Those entering the College (Sixth Form) study from a broad selection of 'A' level subjects, with their education being extended by involvement for all in the Young Enterprise Programme, plus a range of other opportunities. There is a rigorous, tailored programme of preparation for university applications building on the careers guidance received in preceding years.
