Kings Monkton School provides quality nursery provision that cares for and educates boys and girls from the age of three to four. Choosing your child’s first experience of school and ensuring it is a positive one is a vital decision for any parent. We want to instill a positive relationship with learning to set the foundations for the rest of a pupil’s school life.
In partnership with parents, we aim to create a nurturing, friendly, lively and colourful environment where your child can feel happy, safe and secure in an atmosphere full of fun and laughter.
The children start their educational journey at Kings Monkton in our Foundation Class where they follow an exciting play-based curriculum, with a balance of child and teacher initiated activities which are designed to stimulate and develop each individual child.
Children are naturally motivated to learn through their curiosity and their desire to explore, so here at Kings Monkton we aim to stimulate the children and build self-esteem, giving them confidence to try new things. The children are given opportunities for both structured and spontaneous play in our many different areas, including sand and water play, outdoor play, role play, games and dressing up. The children also enjoy many activities using iPads, computers and programmable toys.
The children are encouraged to explore, construct and discover through the six areas of learning for Early Years children.
The development of communication and language is at the heart of young children’s learning. It includes speaking and listening for different purposes; being read a wide range of books, reading simple texts and writing for a variety of purposes.
Within the Early Years – the alphabet is learnt by a method called Jolly Phonics. Phonics are the building bricks of all words and will eventually help your child decipher new vocabulary.
Children’s mathematical development arises out of daily experiences in a rich and interesting environment. It involves becoming confident and competent in learning key skills in numeracy and simple mathematical problem solving.
In this area of learning, children are developing the crucial knowledge, skills and understanding that help them make sense of the world. This forms the foundation stones for later work in science, design and technology, history, geography, information and communication technology.
Physical development in the Foundation Stage is about growth of co-ordination, skills, control, manipulation and movement. Two other very important aspects are increasing self-confidence in what can be achieved and learning about the positive benefits of being healthy and active.
This area of learning is about emotional well-being, promoting self-esteem. It is also about developing respect for others, social competence and a positive disposition for learning.
In our Foundation Class, the first stages of reading, writing and number work, together with the teaching of French, through songs and games, are introduced. This gives the pupils a flying start which is then further built upon in Reception Class.
